“Prune de cythère”


“Prunes de cythère” are native to tropical and subtropical equatorial regions of Melanesia through Polynesia. Also known as June Plum in Jamaica and Bermuda, Golden Apple in Barbados and Guyana and Pommecythere in Trinidad, the “Prune de cythère” belongs to the Anacardiaceae family which also includes the mango and the cashew. The name “Prune de cythère” is also used in other islands such as Martinique or Dominica.


The “Prune de cythère” tree grows fast and can reach up to 18 metres. The fruit is generally 6 to 9 centimetres long, oval-shaped with thick skin which can be removed by biting and peeling away. When the fruit is unripe the skin is green and the flesh is crunchy and a little bit sour but can be eaten by adding some salt. When ripe, the skin is yellow and the flesh sweet which allows making juices or jams. When visiting Guadeloupe Archipelago, the best period to enjoy fresh “Prunes de Cythère” is from September to March.

Culinary Use

In Indonesia, “Prunes de cythère” are steamed and eaten as a vegetable with salt fish and rice. It can also be used as a seasoning for various dishes.

In Guadeloupe Archipelago, “Prunes de cythère” are eaten raw when ripe as a dessert but we also make delicious fresh juices, jams and sorbets.

Nutrient content and Health benefits

“Prunes de cythère” have high vitamin A and C and fibre content as well as being a good source of calcium and iron. Regarding health benefits, the fruit has several qualities to relieve cough, to cure diarrhoea, for the prevention of chronic diseases and is a good anti-stress.
