The Sugar cane (La Canne à sucre)


Origin & Description

Sugar cane is native to South Asia and belongs to the grass family called Poaceae, an economically important seed plant family that includes maize, wheat or rice. Sugar cane is a tropical, perennial grass that forms lateral shoots at the base to produce multiple stems, typically three to four metres high and about five cm in diameter. Sugarcane cultivation requires a tropical or temperate climate. Sugar cane is the source of sugar in several tropical and subtropical countries of the world.

The Sugar cane in Guadeloupe Archipelago

The sugar cane is the main agricultural activity in Guadeloupe and was introduced there in the 17th century. The sugar and the rum are 2 types of industry which are extracted from the sugar cane. In Guadeloupe, there is a couple of sugar refinery producing brown cane sugar for the local population but also to export to France. Furthermore, Guadeloupe rum is famous and is considered as one of the best in the world. There is almost 12000 hectares dedicated to the agricultural crop plus 5000 employees. Unfortunately, weather conditions such as drought, hurricanes may sometimes destroy sugar cane plantation.


In Guadeloupe Archipelago, sugar cane juice is part of the traditional juice. The juice is obtained by crushing peeled sugar cane in a mill. Most of the time the juice is served cold with a squeeze of lime. When visiting Guadeloupe Archipelago you will definitely find fresh sugar cane everywhere.
