Here is the soursop, another tropical fruit which is cultivated in Guadeloupe Archipelago.
Also known as graviola, the scientific name of the soursop is Annona muricata. This broadleaf, flowering and evergreen tree is native to Mexico, Cuba, Central and South America and the West Indies. Additionally, the soursop also growing up in all tropical parts of Africa, especially in Eastern Nigeria and the Democratic republic of Congo as well as South- East Asia and the Pacific. In Guadeloupe Archipelago, it is called “Corossol” in French and “Kowosòl” in creole. Here are few other common names: “Shawshopu” in Eastern Nigeria, “Evo” in Ghana and “Guanábana” in Spanish speaking countries.
The soursop tree is generally between 7 and 9 metres and produces the sweet soursop fruit. The fruit is more or less oval or heart-shaped, sometimes irregular, lopsided or curved. The size ranges from 10 to 30 centimetres long and up to 15 centimetres in width, the weight is comprised between 5 and 7 kilograms. The fruit is compound and covered with an inedible and bitter skin from which protrude few soft, pliable “spines”. The flesh of the fruit consists of an edible, white pulp, some fiber and a core of indigestible, black seeds. The soursop flesh is soft, smooth and sweet and the flavour has been described as a combination of strawberry and pineapple. In Guadeloupe Archipelago, the soursop juice is famous but the pulp is also used to do smoothies, sorbets, ice cream as well as candies.
Beyond its usefulness as a food, the soursop also contains natural compounds with medicinal properties, making it potentially beneficial for your health. Indeed, it is composed of significant amounts of vitamin C and vitamin B and a small amount of iron. Practitioners of herbal medicine recommend the fruit and leaves of the tree to relieve stomach distress, fever, pain and respiratory problems such as cough and asthma, and for many other medical problems. According some Cancer centres some compounds may be naturally antiviral and antiparasitic, and may also suppress inflammation.
